Petra (May 18th)

We were all excited to get to Petra and see where Indiana Jones was filmed. Obviously that wasn’t our only reason for going but it was what had most of us excited. It is one of the 7 wonders of the world, I think…or used to be. So they knew it was a place we needed to stop. It’s the home of what used to be a city that was lost for awhile and then found (obviously…haha) and some of the roads we saw had been built by the Romans. It was quite a lot of walking…most of it wasn’t anything super steep but I have never been more sore in my life. It made the next few days interesting for my legs haha.
Here’s some pictures of what it looked like as we walked through the caverns. It was nice to have some shade to walk in and there was usually a pleasant breeze.

You had the option to rent a horse/carriage or a camel but none of us ended up doing it. As we were walking back later me and one of my friends regretted not taking a carriage back (it would’ve cost us 20 denar for the both of us) but it was a long, hot, sweaty walk back.

We made it to the center of Petra and that is where we stopped to have our lunch. We paid $10 American dollars to buy this sack lunch…it was pretty gross…I ended up only eating the pita bread and the cookies. The yogurt was the grossest thing I have ever had and the fruits/veggies that they offered us were an orange, a tomato, and a cucumber. The orange was to hard to peel so I just shared someone elses. After lunch our guides let us have 2 hours of freedom. A majority of the group decided to go on a big hike but I decided I probably couldn’t handle that. So me, Esther, Alysha, David, and Michael decided to go off on our own (I know names probably mean nothing to you at home, but when I go back to this later they will mean something to me).

We started off just climbing rocks that were off the path. We went into caves like this one

Our guide also told us to find the “colored caves”. He had pointed out where they are so we decided to head that way. We got a little lost but we found a little Jordanian boy who helped us (we are always afraid to ask for help because they usually ask for money after and all of the kids were trying to rip off all the tourists haha so we had to be careful. But this boy was pretty nice. He showed us right where to go. It was blocked off so we couldn’t go inside, but he climbed through a hole and got in and said “give camera. I take good picture”. HA ya right little kid. We all refused that offer. He then came back out and handed us all pieces of the colored rock. David refused because he thought the boy was going to make him pay but the little boy thrust it into his hands and shouted “GIFT FOR YOU!” so he took it, haha. So basically the boy was just being nice. So it was all cool.

This next area is from a scene in Indiana Jones.

This was in the another big area of Petra so there were tourist shops and lots of the carts were waiting here to drive people places there were also some camels to ride.
One really cool thing was the bathroom that was IN a cave. It was so cool looking. Bathrooms here are always interesting. You never know if you are going to need your own toilet paper, or if you are going to push a button to flush or use a hose. It’s always different. The hotels are usually pretty consistent though. Thank goodness.

I think that is basically all of Petra. It was the first big thing that took a lot of muscle work and I definitely felt it the next day when I got out of bed and almost fell on my face because my legs couldn’t take the weight/pain. But I’ve managed J
OH! I almost forgot. There was a dog there that people kept telling me was my twin dog. Because it had ORANGE hair…psshh. Haha. Here’s a picture.
